Trailer park

Is the world ready for a suicide bomber comedy (suicide bomedy)? Almost certainly not, but it looks very funny.
Also, new trailer for the upcoming season of Lost. I think we can all agree that it’s not marketing hyperbole to call this the television event of the year. I mean that’s just true. It’s a fact.
And [...]

Hello, and Welcome Back to 1990

I just watched: Twin Peaks Seasons 1& 2 and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
It took longer than I hoped, and at times it turned into a real slog, but I finally finished working my way through the whole Twin Peaks universe, and I have to say: eh.
There were parts of it that I super-duper [...]

The lost decade

I was a little underwhelmed by A.O. Scott’s recap of the decade in movies when I read it this weekend, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on why. Then, I read Isaac Chotiner’s blog post about the article, and it seemed exactly right. Not only did it feel like Scott was trumpeting middling movies, [...]

Attention: All Geeky 6th Graders

I just watched: The Lost Room

1) I’m consistently uncomfortable watching this that he’s about to lose it and attack Johnny Cash.
2) It shouldn’t strike me as quite so strange that Johnny Cash used to have a tv show, but it does.
3) “A Boy Named Sue” is amazing.
4) Duh.

Transmedia express

David Bordwell has a great post up on his blog about storytelling across media. His points about the mutual suspicion between filmmakers and theorists is absolutely true, but much more interesting to me is the subsequent discussion about how filmmakers are pursuing their stories into different media. His signal example seems to be The Matrix, [...]

The king isn’t exactly naked, but he’s certainly dressed immodestly

NBC’s Kings is almost one of the best shows on television. Based on the biblical story of King Saul’s crazed love/hate relationship with the ascendent King David, there are enough reversals, double-crosses and cold-blooded murders to last for several seasons, and the writing, photography and acting (especially Ian McShane as King Silas — they had [...]
